As Amy Williams let herself into her house, she heard the unmistakable sounds of her son Garrett and his best friend Bradley laughing and joking. The occasional muffled thud, suggested that they were up to the usual rough-housing and mindful of the damage done on the last occasion their play-fighting had gotten out of hand she raised her voice and called out "Garrett, I'm home."
As she'd expected the muffled thuds stopped immediately. She walked through the house and found the two young men waiting for her. Her son was wearing an expression that suggested he was trying hard not to laugh, while his best friend, while at first appearing calmer, also on closer inspection looked like he had a secret to hide. She sighed mentally, wondering what mischief they'd been up to.
"Hi Mom" said Garrett, neatly confirming her suspicions as he came close to giggling.
"Hi Mrs. Williams" said Bradley, as he gently but firmly stepped on her son's foot.
Amy pretended not to notice. The two boys were as inseparable as their father's were. Amy's husband Mike and Bradley's father Scott had grown up in each other's pockets and their sons, born only 6 weeks apart had done the same. Amy often joked with Bradley's mother, Michelle, that she never knew whether she was going to come home to two boys or no boys, but she knew she'd never come home to one. As they'd grown older Amy appreciated the steadying influence Bradley had on Garrett. Although the younger of the two, he always looked the older and had managed to stop her son from getting into a fix on many occasions. Once again, it would appear Bradley was keeping Garrett under control.
"So I thought you two were spending the day at the mall." Said Amy.
"We were, but we decided to use the pool instead." said Garrett "We figured it might be the last chance we get to use it this year." he said, picking at his red surf shorts.
"Well I don’t mind in the slightest." said Amy, "But you boys will have to get your own lunch. I promised your great Aunt Enid I'd drive over and see her today. In fact I only stopped to drop off the groceries and then I'm heading out."
"Would you like some help unpacking?" asked Bradley.
"You're always so thoughtful." said Amy smiling "But don't worry I've only a couple of bags to empty. It'll be easiest if I do it." and she turned and headed out the room.
The boys waited a moment and then Garrett leant in close to Bradley and said quietly but exaggeratedly "Ohhhh, Bradley. You're always soooooo thoughtful." before collapsing helplessly on the floor with laughter.
Bradley looked at him in disgust "A lot of help you are. Can't you stop goofing around for just 2 minutes."
Garrett had his face in his hands, trying to muffle his own laughing. He nodded silently and then looked up at Bradley. As he took his hands down, he revealed a now hideously distorted face with his ears pulled forward onto his cheeks and his nose stretched down over his mouth.
"I guess that's a no." Bradley sighed "Dude, cut it out. What if she came back in now?" and he reached out and pushed at pulled at his buddy's face until it looked normal.
Garrett reached out to pull Bradley's nose, but Bradley slapped his hand away, hard. "Fuck off! If you want to risk tearing your suit, that's up to you. But leave mine alone."
"Oh relax dude." said Garrett "These things are ultra-stretchy. I don't think I could rip it if I tried"
"Well that's not a risk I'm willing to take. Not after what we went through to get them."
"I just to finish trying them our properly" said Garrett.
"And we will, just as soon as your 'Mom' heads out, like she said she's going to. But until then, just try not to blow your cover."
"OK dude." said Garrett "So while we're waiting... last one in the pool's a loser." and he sprinted out into the yard.
"Such a fucking idiot." muttered Bradley under his breath, but he had a wide grin on his face as he sprinted after his best friend.
